ACE USA today announced the appointment of James W. Macdonald to senior vice president and chief underwriting officer, Special Risk Facilities (SRF). Based in Philadelphia, Macdonald has responsibility for the profitable growth of the SRF underwriting business unit, including all aspects of pricing and risk selection.
“Along with his strong technical underwriting skills, Jim brings to this position diverse and specialized industry experience in areas including brokerage, insurance and reinsurance, and MGA relationships,” said Bill Curcio, president of SRF. “Jim's expertise, combined with proven sales and leadership abilities, will enhance SRF's continued profitable growth.”

An insurance industry veteran with more than 30 years' experience, Macdonald is also a respected consultant, author and public speaker. He has spoken at professional conferences including RIMS, CPCU and the Casualty Actuarial Society, and is the author of a recent in-depth study of the U.S. medical malpractice market.
Macdonald joins ACE USA from the American Psychologists Association Insurance Trust in Washington, D.C., where he served as vice president, Professional Liability. Prior senior leadership roles included serving as president and chief operating officer for CNA HealthPro, the Professional Liability Group (PLG) of CNA Financial of Chicago and as executive vice president, Specialty Operations for Continental Insurance Company.
Macdonald has also served as president, General Casualty Group for American International Group's (AIG) American Home Assurance Company, and as chief underwriting officer for AIG Risk Management. Earlier experience includes managerial and underwriting roles with Munich American Reinsurance, Marsh & McLennan, Ian Elliot Limited, and General Reinsurance.
Macdonald earned his bachelor of arts degree in English Literature from the University of Notre Dame.
